When James Cameron saw photographs of Zhangjiajie's towering sandstone pillars, they inspired the floating Hallelujah Mountains in Avatar. In reality, these 3,000+ quartzite pillars rising from misty forests are even more spectacular than the movie.
The Must-See Attractions
Zhangjiajie National Forest Park
China's first national forest park and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Yuanjiajie area contains the "Avatar Hallelujah Mountain" (officially renamed Southern Sky Column). Take the Bailong Elevator - the world's tallest outdoor elevator (326 meters) - for jaw-dropping views from the top.
Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge
The world's highest and longest glass-bottom bridge spans 430 meters at a height of 300 meters above the canyon floor. Walking across with nothing but glass between you and the abyss is a heart-pounding experience. Not for those with a fear of heights!
Tianmen Mountain
Home to the famous Tianmen Cave (Heaven's Gate) - a natural hole in the mountain you reach by climbing 999 steps. The glass cliff walkway wraps around the mountain at 1,400 meters. Take the world's longest cable car ride (7.5 km) to the top.
How Many Days Do You Need?
We recommend 3 full days:
- Day 1: Zhangjiajie National Forest Park - Yuanjiajie & Golden Whip Stream
- Day 2: Tianmen Mountain - cable car, glass walkway, Heaven's Gate
- Day 3: Grand Canyon Glass Bridge & Baofeng Lake
Getting There
Zhangjiajie has its own airport (Zhangjiajie Hehua Airport) with flights from most major Chinese cities including Beijing (2.5 hours), Shanghai (2 hours), and Guangzhou (1.5 hours). High-speed trains connect to Changsha (3 hours).
Tips for Visiting
- Avoid Chinese national holidays (May 1-5, Oct 1-7) when parks are overwhelmingly crowded
- Wear layers - temperatures at the top can be 10 degrees cooler than below
- Misty and cloudy days create the most dramatic "floating mountain" photos
- The Bailong Elevator queues can be 2+ hours on busy days - arrive early
- Bring waterproof gear - sudden rain showers are common
