The Li River cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo is one of the world's most beautiful river journeys. For 83 kilometers, you drift past a surreal landscape of limestone karst peaks, bamboo groves, and farmers tending rice paddies with water buffalo.
The Journey
The cruise departs from Zhujiang Pier (about 30 minutes south of Guilin) and takes approximately 4-5 hours to reach Yangshuo. The scenery featured on the 20 RMB banknote is found between the Nine Horse Fresco Hill and Yellow Cloth Shoal.
Highlights Along the Way
- Crown Cave: A vast underground cave system with stalactites and an underground river
- Nine Horse Fresco Hill: A cliff face where locals see nine horses hidden in the rock patterns
- Yellow Cloth Shoal: The iconic scene printed on China's 20 RMB note
- Xingping: The most photographed stretch with dramatic karst reflections
- Fishermen with cormorants: Traditional fishing scenes (especially early morning)
Cruise Options
Full River Cruise (Guilin to Yangshuo): 4-5 hours, the classic experience. Choose a 3-star or 4-star boat. The 4-star boats are less crowded with better food and upper deck access.
Short Cruise (Yangdi to Xingping): 1.5 hours covering the most scenic section. Good option if you're short on time. Small bamboo rafts available for a more intimate experience.
Yangshuo - Don't Just Pass Through
Many travelers make the mistake of cruising to Yangshuo then immediately returning to Guilin. Yangshuo deserves at least 2 days. Rent a bicycle and ride through the stunning countryside, hike Moon Hill, explore the West Street night market, and watch the Impression Liu Sanjie water show.
Best Time to Visit
April-October offers the lushest scenery with green rice paddies. April-May is particularly stunning with spring blooms. The rainy season (June-July) can cause heavy mist that adds a dreamlike quality but may also cancel cruises during floods.
