The Great Wall of China stretches over 13,000 miles across northern China, making it one of the most impressive architectural feats in human history. But with so many sections to choose from, planning your visit can be overwhelming. This guide covers everything you need to know.
Best Sections to Visit
Not all sections of the Great Wall are the same. Here are our top recommendations based on different traveler preferences:
Mutianyu - Best for First-Timers
Located 70 km northeast of Beijing, Mutianyu is well-restored with beautiful watchtowers, surrounded by dense forest. It has a cable car and toboggan ride down, making it accessible for all fitness levels. Less crowded than Badaling, especially on weekdays.
Jinshanling - Best for Photographers
This semi-restored section offers the most dramatic views, with crumbling watchtowers set against rolling mountains. The sunrise here is legendary among photographers. The hike from Jinshanling to Simatai is considered the most scenic Great Wall trek.
Jiankou - Best for Adventurers
An unrestored, wild section that offers a challenging and rewarding hike. Not for the faint of heart - some sections require scrambling. But the raw, untouched beauty is unmatched. Always go with an experienced guide.
Badaling - Most Accessible
The most visited section, fully restored with wheelchair access on some parts. Can be very crowded, especially during holidays. Best visited early morning or late afternoon. Easy to reach by public transport from Beijing.
When to Visit
The best times to visit the Great Wall are:
- April - May (Spring): Mild weather, blooming flowers, clear skies. Ideal conditions.
- September - November (Autumn): Stunning fall foliage, comfortable temperatures, and the clearest visibility.
- Winter: Fewer crowds and dramatic snow-covered scenery, but cold and potentially icy.
- Summer (June-August): Hot and humid with occasional rain. Mornings are best.
Practical Tips
