Terracotta Warriors

Discovered by farmers digging a well in 1974, the Terracotta Army is one of the most significant archaeological finds in history. Over 8,000 life-sized soldiers, horses, and chariots guard the tomb of China's first emperor, Qin Shi Huang.

The Three Pits

Pit 1 - The Main Army

The largest and most impressive pit, containing approximately 6,000 warriors arranged in battle formation. The sheer scale is breathtaking - rows upon rows of soldiers stretching into the distance under a massive hangar-like structure. Each face is unique, believed to be modeled after real soldiers.

Pit 2 - The Military Guard

Smaller but more complex, containing cavalry, infantry, archers, and war chariots in different formations. Some of the best-preserved individual figures were found here, and you can see close-ups of warriors in glass cases.

Pit 3 - The Command Center

The smallest pit, believed to represent the command post. Contains 68 warriors who appear to be high-ranking officers, along with a war chariot. The arrangement suggests strategic planning and military hierarchy.

Tips for the Best Experience

  1. Hire a guide: The history is fascinating but not well-presented in English signage. A knowledgeable guide transforms the visit.
  2. Visit Pit 1 last: Start with Pit 3, then 2, then 1 for a building sense of scale and drama.
  3. Check the exhibition hall: See the bronze chariots and horses, which are even more detailed than the warriors.
  4. Combine with Xi'an: Xi'an's Muslim Quarter, City Wall cycling, and Big Wild Goose Pagoda are all must-sees.

What Else to See in Xi'an

Xi'an deserves at least 2-3 days. Beyond the warriors, explore the ancient City Wall by bicycle (the full loop takes about 2 hours), feast on lamb skewers and hand-pulled noodles in the bustling Muslim Quarter, and visit the beautiful Big Wild Goose Pagoda at sunset.
