Navigating China's visa requirements can seem daunting, but with the right information the process is straightforward. This guide covers everything from visa types to application tips, updated for 2026.

Do You Need a Visa?

Most foreign nationals need a visa to enter mainland China. However, China has been expanding visa-free and transit exemption policies. Check the latest policies before applying, as regulations change frequently.

Transit Without Visa (TWOV)

China offers visa-free transit for travelers passing through select cities:

  • 144-Hour Visa-Free Transit: Available in Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Chengdu, and other major cities. You can explore the designated area for up to 6 days.
  • 72-Hour Transit: Available in additional cities including Changsha, Harbin, and Guilin.
  • Requirements: You must have a confirmed onward ticket to a third country (not the one you arrived from) and stay within the permitted area.

Application Process

  1. Gather all required documents
  2. Complete the online application form
  3. Submit in person at your nearest Chinese embassy, consulate, or authorized visa center
  4. Pay the application fee ($140 USD for US citizens, varies by nationality)
  5. Processing takes 4-7 business days (express service available at extra cost)
  6. Collect your passport with visa stamp

Tips for a Smooth Application

  • Apply 4-6 weeks before your trip to allow plenty of time
  • Double-check every detail on the application form - mistakes lead to rejection
  • Your itinerary does not need to be final, but should be realistic and match your hotel bookings
  • If visiting Tibet, your tour operator must arrange a separate Tibet Travel Permit
  • Hong Kong and Macau have separate entry requirements from mainland China
  • Keep photocopies of all documents plus digital copies in cloud storage

Hong Kong & Macau

Most nationalities can visit Hong Kong and Macau visa-free for 14-90 days (depending on nationality). These Special Administrative Regions have separate immigration from mainland China. You can visit on the 144-hour transit exemption or with a separate entry into the SAR.
